Nothing New, Only Borrowed

September 16, 2016

Hi all, sorry I have been away for so long, but i have a new project! ‘Nothing New, Only Borrowed’ is my monthly styling project using my own clothes as well as borrowing from friends. One of the great things about being at University is being able to exchange clothes, especially when money is tight. I hope this will offer an insight into our street style, as well as dipping into key trends for the next few months! First up is Project D – D for Dungarees in the beautiful Yorkshire sun that we have been enjoying – let me know what you think!

miss-vogue-apr14-vogue-6mar14-pr_b_426x639The Miss Vogue magazine is such a good and long awaited idea by the British Vogue team. I remember endlessly flicking through Vogue and never quite finding something for a 16 year old to take inspiration from, I loved the photo shoots and general style tips but that was about it understandably. Now a dedicated Vogue reader, I literally read every article..apart from the ones about gardens and houses – I’m not quite ready for that –  I am still on the teen/adult fence so I embrace any magazine with a bit of showbiz and wit mixed with fashion, such as Asos mag. When I glanced at the the April Edition of Miss Vogue my first thought was ‘surely that is not a British magazine?!’ It failed at the first hurdle – I am sorry to say it but the cover is far too ‘Americanized’ and as a result just ..a bit..well tacky and cheesy! Even when flicking through it I found nothing that caught my eye or made me read a full article. After properly taking the time to enjoy it I did however find some great content.

‘Jump to it’ and ‘Wanna be in my gang’ were great for providing a bit of style inspiration and looking at ways to enhance personal style. The Miss Vogue Spotlight and Notebook pages were gorgeous, I love being shown quirky new fashion finds, literary and cultural works and lets not forget looking at this year’s eye candy…currently swooning over Dylan Ryder! Any beauty pages and WellBeing articles are a must and like ‘Mrs’ Vogue deliver to a high standard. One thing I would love is photographic hair tutorials, you know where you can actually see the steps to create the look – Page 101 displays the ‘New Up-Do’, but the head shot is really only the model’s face and not the hairstyle! The ‘Bright Young Things’ page is a wonderful way to promote new and up coming British talent, I only wish I was more talented.

Class of 2014

Class of 2014

As much as I enjoyed light heartedly flicking through Miss Vogue I felt the target audience  and age range was all over the place. The ‘Fairy Godmother Buys’ promoted gifts ranging from  £79 to £1,490, I don’t know about you but I doubt and certainly wouldn’t expect anyone to spend that much on a gift – let alone a Godmother. To make up for this a couple of pages are dedicated to Claire’s Accessories to target a younger (much younger) audience but still…Claire’s?! The ‘Class of 2014’  style pages shown above, based on the theme of ‘Superstardom’, left me nonplussed – each outfit was hideous and what’s the point in that? The magazine is certainly still finding its feet but it is perfect for an easy read and with a little inspiration taken from other teen mags like Asos and Tatler it will soon be a teen hit.

Seeing Slogans

January 29, 2014

Slogan tees have been around for the last two seasons or more, I think we all remember the green Kenzo jumper right? Well since then the trend seems to have escalated. Originating from street style, and of course band t shirts, for Spring/Summer 2014 they have been re worked for high end fashion collections such as Alexander Wang – with their replicas returning to the streets as I speak. I can’t say I’m a huge fan though. One I’m just definitely not grungy or ‘cool’ enough and two I am pretty sure in a years time the meaningfulness behind the words on my t shirt will just dissolve into nothingness! Saying that I do like the off duty casual vibe they give out – great for a lazy day when you don’t feel like making much effort. Let me know what you think!

Burberry Prorsum

October 29, 2013

Burberry Prorsum

Leopard print is one of those trends that comes around year after year, but still every time I feel it is a struggle to move away from leopard print’s un-classy stigma. However this season Burberry Prorsum led the way with a leopard print revival! I think this is the most gorgeous and flattering look I have seen so far. Wearing an animal print skirt is just as, if not more, daring as wearing a leopard print coat so keep all other parts of the outfit simple and plain. I have even chosen accessories plainer than those shown above! I would highly recommend the Asos belt, definitely an investment piece as it is easily adjustable and works wonders with everything.

Obsessed to the Max

July 21, 2013

This summer, which can you believe we have actually had, I have been obsessed with everything MAXI. Maxi or pencil skirts and long flowing maxi dresses. Of course I love wearing little shorts and skirts like everyone else, but unlike everyone else I only tend to wear my high waisted denim shorts and casual crop tops at festivals and by the poolside. When it comes to a shopping trip or evening meal I would much rather be covered up and cool than extremely exposed and self concious.

What is it with the English mentality to wear as little clothing as possible when the sun comes out? Do we really want to see eachother’s bum cheeks or rolls of fat on our trip to the supermarket – no thank you! Here are a few solutions that I have not stopped wearing over the last month, so comfortable and highly versatile. The maxi style works with heels or flats, crop tops or blouses, generally whatever look you go for, I’m certain you can make it work with a maxi style.

Asos Black Maxi

Asos Maxi Dress with back split. £18.00 I don’t think I have worn this on it’s own once, I prefer to layer a classic white Tee over the top or an elegant cream blouse.

New Look maxi blue

New Look Navy Maxi. £14.99 The navy maxi is such a good wardrobe investment because unlike black it is slightly more summery and so can be worn with more summer wardrobe staples. I love belting it and putting it with a long navy cardigan if there’s a cool breeze.

Oasis Pleated maxi

Oasis Pleated Maxi Dress in White. £70.00 Just perfect for a smart evening meal or lunch date. What I love about white in the summer is the endless jewellery combinations you can experiment with, turquoise is one of my favourites.

Topshop Black Pencil

Topshop double layer tube skirt. £20.00 The classic black pencil skirt is always present in my winter and summer wardrobe. Perfect with tights and heels in the winter and just as gorgeous with black flat sandals and a white T shirt or crop top.

Vionnet

March 1, 2013

Vionnet Sping/Summer 2013

Well spring is finally on the way and so out come our spring wardrobes! Mine is looking very depleted though, the rain but mixed with the slightly warmer weather really makes choosing the correct combinations a challenge doesn’t it? What I really like about this look from Vionnet is the fluidity of the shapes, the fabrics look fine and cool enough to stop you from over heating but the jacket and long trousers keep away winter’s remnants. Mango is my go to brand for this S/S – you have been warned!

Nina Ricci

February 7, 2013

Nina Ricci

I don’t care what people say, it is still winter where I live, so I will keep going with my A/W deconstructions up until March. Despite the cold weather this look is bared legged but the over sized coat and fur collar counteracts this completely! I love how elegant this look is and in fact the whole of the Nina Ricci collection, so you should definitely take a look at it for more inspiration. I think a silk wrap dress would have been perfect for this look, but unfortunately I could not find one, let me know if you know if you can!

Kenzo

December 20, 2012

I am sure you have all seen and wanted those pop inspired Kenzo jumpers that have been at the forefront of fashion circles recently, but for this look I chose something a little more classic from their collection. Palazzos are the perfect day to evening trousers, make sure you wear them high waisted with heels! As some of the other looks in the collection demonstrated, these trousers work with a delicate shirt for night and a chunky knit, shown here, for day time. I love the cobalt blue as well!

Jill Stuart

December 9, 2012

I love the simplistic style here! I don’t think I have featured Jill Stuart before so it is nice to look at different designers who do that simple elegance so well! Nothing is overly embellished or accessorized in this look, so that is just how I would wear it with the options above. The ankle strap looks fine with this look as well because of the trousers falling round the ankle!
