Take me to the Ball

May 12, 2012

I can’t help but feel utterly romanticised when someone mentions going to a ball, how I wish we could all still be debutantes! Even if you could go to a ball today, rare that they are, to wear what one would call a proper ballgown, would definitely cost an unspeakable amount. Not only are most gowns bespoke (a one off) the layers and layers of tulle and chiffon, not to mention the valuable time spent making the garment, would leave you with no money for who knows how many years!  Today so much of the classic 50’s style has been left behind, what’s happened to the style of dress seen on Grace Kelly in High Society? The dresses I saw from the Met Ball 2012 have been skimming to say the least and so disappointing!

Dresses featured in Vogue’s 1948 edition. Note the white gloves and flowing layers of fabric, all in pastel pale colours.

Below: The Met Ball 2012: Left, Lily Collins wears Valentino Haute Couture. A gorgeous dress that oozes femininity and youthfulness. Right, Mia Wasikowska wears Prada. I thought the pleating was incredible on this dress, so demure and utterly sophisticated. I don’t usually like red on the red garment, but deep red seems to work quite well

This month the Victoria and Albert Museum will open their Ballgowns exhibition, with gowns dating from the 1950’s to the present day. I cannot wait to go! The curator Oriole Cullen described how the collection “creates a fantasy-like setting which will surprise and delight our visitors.”
